Sustainability & Conservation

Conservation and tourism are seamlessly intertwined at Shadowland Expeditions

The passion runs deep in our veins for not only Ata Whenua Fiordland, but all New Zealand's great outdoors. It is our utmost pleasure to share this special part of the world with our guests, as we preserve the environments our Tanagata Whenua have cherished before us, and act as custodians for our future generations to enjoy.

We are privileged to have access to some of New Zealand's most picturesque and remote locations in Fiordland National Park.

Our forage for a feed ethos ensures our guests catch and keep only what is required during the expedition, which reiterates our intentions to restore, protect, and enhance our natural environment, so it may be enjoyed by many generations to come. This ethos also ensures that no excess seafood is taken from the ocean.

Ensuring we operate with a small footprint through Dusky Sound and its pristine environment, all rubbish and recycling is removed, supplies are transported out, and laundry is done offsite. Our freshwater is made onboard through our freshwater maker or collected from local freshwater streams.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is another organisation that cares for the precious landscapes around Aotearoa. As part of our operations in Fiordland, like many of the protected National Parks, Shadowland Expeditions supports DOC and their conservation efforts in the area including bird banding, marine monitoring, and national predator control.
