How many rooms do you have on the Overnight Vessel (SeaFinn)?  

SeaFinn includes three private suites, which are configured as two twin suites with a private ensuite each, and a third suite with bunk beds.  

Does Shadowland Expeditions welcome children?  

Yes, Shadowland Expeditions is the perfect place for families, including multi-generational family groups to enjoy time together in the outdoors. Children will love the adventure as much as adults, especially having a suite to themselves with bunk beds for their own space.  

Do we book the entire boat? 

Yes, of course. Booking an expedition with us, whether you’re doing a day or overnight expedition, guarantees the exclusive use of our vessels for you and your party.  

How many nights should we stay? 

There is a minimum 2-night stay for our overnight expedition. This is to ensure guests get the full experience of Dusky Sound and get the opportunity to relax at the slow pace of Fiordland time. Of course, if your travel allows, we recommend additional nights for further adventure.  

What can we do while we are there? 

There are endless opportunities for activities aboard the vessel, both above and below the water.  

For our day expedition, these include fishing, hiking, exploration, wildlife viewing, photograph opportunities, and history.  

Our overnight expeditions include diving, paddle boarding, snorkelling, fishing, hiking, exploration, swimming, And a hot tub beneath the stars.  

What is included in the rates? 

For the Day Expedition, included is a return scenic helicopter flight, professional guide, private boat cruise, and a fully catered gourmet picnic lunch.  

For the Overnight Expedition, included is the exclusive use of the boat for the duration of your expedition, accommodation for up to eight guests in three private suites, a private skipper & guide for ocean activities(including paddle boarding, fishing, and snorkelling). A hot tub, all meals including canapes and an extensive selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition, a selection of Reserve wines and spirits is also available for purchase. New Zealand’s Goods & Services Tax (GST) of 15%

Which is the closest airport? 

We offer departures from various airports including Queenstown, Wanaka, and Manapouri. There are numerous flights to and from Queenstown every day connecting with Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, as well as cities throughout Australia.  

What about private and charter aircraft? 

Fixed-wing aircraft including private jets are able to land at either Wanaka Airport, Queenstown Airport or Manapouri Airport. Please contact us for more information about private charters, and contacts for ground handling, as well as arranging discrete and easy transfers direct to private aircraft. We can meet you airside and fly you directly to Dusky Sound. 

Do I have to fly there? 

Yes. There is no road access to Dusky Sound, so all guests (as well as staff and supplies) need to be flown into the floating helipad. Getting to and from Dusky Sound is a wonderful part of the expedition experience.   

I have a rental vehicle, where can I leave this? 

If you have a rental or private vehicle, we can arrange for this to be stored at our Wanaka or Queenstown heliports at no additional charge for the duration of your stay or experience. Manapouri Airport also has parking space available for use.  

How much luggage can I bring? 

Due to weight restrictions on aircraft, guests are limited to one suitcase weighing no more than 23kg per person (or 62 linear inches), plus one small bag. Secure luggage storage is available at our Queenstown and Wanaka heliports at no additional charge for the duration of your expedition for any excess luggage requirements.    

What other information should we provide? 

Under Civil Aviation Authority rules all guest names and weights as well as a contact person and phone number need to be advised in advance. 

Is WiFi available on the vessel? 

Yes, there is high-speed wireless available on overnight expeditions. It’s also an incredible place to disconnect from the world for a short while.  

Are there televisions? 

There is a TV with satellite television and Netflix available in each suite on SeaFinn for overnight expeditions.  

What clothes should we bring to Dusky Sound? 

The expeditions take place in Fiordland which is known to have rain for 200 days of the year. The weather is usually wet, and changeable, so we suggest guests bring multiple layers when they are out exploring, including a rainproof jacket. Supportive, flat-sole sports or outdoor shoes are best suited to the environments we explore.  

Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit to enjoy the fiord and the hot tub for SeaFinn guests.  

What sort of food do You Serve aboard expeditions? 

Our team of chefs work with the freshest of produce and protein, much of it from Minaret Station’s 50,000-acre farm, or from local growers and farmers we know and trust. Our chefs use these fresh local flavours combined with fresh seafood, fish and crayfish from your expedition to produce exceptional meals. They look to bring out the best of the region in a clean and simple style without overcomplicating.  

 What if I have particular dietary requirements? 

Our chefs are very used to working with guests who have specific dietary requirements. These might be allergies, diets, religious beliefs or simply dislikes. The most important thing is you notify our Reservations team at the time of booking to ensure that our chefs have all the information required. All of our produce is flown into Fiordland so advanced notice allows us to confidently cater to your needs. 

Am I allowed to smoke on board the vessel?  

Smoking is only permitted in the designated outdoor areas on board the vessels.

Dusky Sound is in Fiordland National Park, southwest of the South Island of New Zealand.
